The InData Initiative announces the release of the European LCA data network for construction products

The InData Initiative announces the release of the European LCA data network for construction products

InData is proud to announce the delivery of the next milestone and one of its core objectives: the public release of its data network. Through the InData website, both, product-specific and generic data, based on LCA according to international standards for construction products, is available in machine-readable form across multiple international data providers.

The International EPD® System is proud member of InData, which is an informal, non-profit working group of interested stakeholders who are supporting the mission to establish an open web-based international data network structure for EPD/LCA data using a common data format. They are offering a common core of information and applying quality rules (InData compliance).

- The work of InData is of extreme importance for the use of EPD information in digital applications. We are working together to harmonize and further develop the digital data format (ILCD+EPD), which is key for many applications that make use of EPD data, says Sebastian Welling, Director Operations at EPD International.

An open network structure is to enable open access to data and thus flexible new applications while maintaining individual ownership and responsibility for the data by the individual data providers, program operators, and declaration owners. Each data supplier publishes InData compliant data through their own network node, across all of which users can perform queries on the InData website and through an API.

The “International Open Data Network for Sustainable Buildings”, the InData Working Group, originated from a growing interest in structuring and using information from Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for sustainable building assessments.

EPD International expands it works on climate-related and circular procurement

EPD International has recently accelerated its work on climate-related and circular procurement.

One part of the work focuses on the unique possibility for EPDs to provide quantitative and comparable bids facilitating the daily work of procurement authorities. EPDs are also a prerequisite for organizations wanting to set reliable goals for their work to mitigate climate impact. As a first step, EPD International has the ambition to prepare PCRs for all commodities commonly procured in the public sector and provide practical guidelines for making use of PCR and EPD in daily procurement activities.

Another part of the work focuses on specific future challenges in connection to circular procurement. It has recently been observed that circular procurement in many cases is carried out in a quite different way compared to sustainable development by focusing less on legal requirements in the call for tenders. Instead, the needs and market analysis as well as following-up activities are more important for the requirements to be set in circular procurement.

EPD International has the ambition to develop EPDs close to a “one-stop shopping” system for circular procurement, with special merits to serve as a verification tool. The environmental performance data in the EPD should therefore be tailored for use in different applications and scenarios.
